The Battle of Sedgemoor was the last conflict by Englishmen against Englishmen. The Duke of Monmouth (the illegitimate son of Charles II) tried to overthrow James II of England in 1685. His efforts were eventually crushed on the flat, marshy lands close by here. In the final outcome, some 500 rebel troops were surrounded and held prisoner in St Mary's church in the background.
