Rhiwlas owned by the Price family was one of the major estates of Meirionnydd, with some 14,000 acres of land. The family which traces its origin to Marchweithian, one of the founders of the 15 clans of Gwynedd, particularly prospered under the Tudors, with Sion Wyn ap Cadwaladr Price taking possession of crown wastes and former monastic lands. The castellated Rhiwlas mansion of 1820 was destroyed by fire and was replaced by a modern house. This arch is all that survives of the 19th century structures. The core of the old landed estate still owned and farmed by the family includes some of the best land in the Bala area.
