Described by Pevsner in The Buildings of England: Essex as "That rare survival, an early 13th century manor house." The stone wing on this side belongs to that period. The timber-framed hall in the middle of the building dates from the early 14th century. The wing on the far side is 15th century. This is the view from the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin.
