Carved along the top bar: 'Cherry Champion', 'Madrigal Champion Filly' and 'Warwick Royal 1931'. Internet research suggests that the Royal Agricultural Show was held at Warwick Castle in 1931 so I would imagine these are the names of animals (horses?) which may have won prizes there.
