Les Maisons de Dieu were established in Lairgate in 1467, funded by the church of St John the Evangelist. The almshouses were rebuilt with 13 rooms in 1823. The building was sold in 1937 and much of it later demolished. The 1908 O.S. map and the Victoria County History appear to indicate that the building was located at No.108 Lairgate (the VCH incorrectly states the non-existent No.608). The present 14 Maisons de Dieu were built in Morton Lane in 1934 by Robert Greenwood Tarran of Kingston upon Hull, on land purchased by the Beverley Consolidated Charity from the Trustees of the Boyd Home for Gentlewomen. Affixed to the façade of No.1 are the plaques of the past and present Maisons de Dieu.
