Hill End is on the right whilst the white weatherboarded dwelling is Rocks Lane Cottage. On Balcombe's 1839 tithe map the former was the Gardeners' Arms Inn, one of six public houses or inns within the parish during that survey. Other than a reference to an inquest in The Times dating 1846 I've currently found no other mention and by the 1874 OS map appears to have become a private house. Rocks Lane is the old road to Cuckfield replaced by the then new turnpike London Road, the current B2036, in 1809.
