Scheduled to depart at 23:45, the sleeper takes a leisurely 8 hours (just over) to reach Penzance, with prolonged stops at Exeter and Plymouth. The train consists of eight carriages of 1970s/80s vintage, four of which are sleeping cars, one lounge buffet and three seated cars. One of the seated cars is also a combined brake/luggage van. It has just been announced that the Cornish sleeper trains are to be refurbished. Good that the service has a secure future, and good for the traditionalists that this old stock will continue in use, but perhaps a pity that an opportunity to ‘piggy-back’ on the order for totally new Scottish sleeper cars was not taken http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/traction-rolling-stock/single-view/view/caf-signs-caledonian-sleeper-coach-contract.html – the downside of Britain’s now very fragmented railways?
