William Guthrie was one of the preachers who were outed when they refused to accept the ruling of King Charles I that he, not Jesus Christ, was the head of the church. It led to nearly 30 years of bitter conflict. The stone, erected in 1854, tells us: IN MEMORY OF THE REV WILLIAM GUTHRIE FIRST MINISTER OF THIS PARISH AND AUTHOR OF “THE CHRISTIAN’S GREAT INTEREST”. BORN 1620. ORDAINED 1644. EJECTED BY PRELATIC PERSECUTION 1664. WORN OUT BY LABOURS AND SUFFERINGS HE DIED 1665 IN THE CHURCH OF BRECHIN.
