In Chichester Road, which must for centuries have been the main road from London to Chichester. The photo shows the southern range of the hotel, brick-built and said to date from about 1700. Just edging into the right-hand side of the picture is part of the hotel's older, timber-framed northern range. Through traffic is now routed via North Street, further west.
