Weymouth has had railway lines around the harbour since the 1860s. They were used as a tramway to provide a link from the main station to the harbour further south of the town. Originally it ran largely along what is now Commercial Road, but in the late 1930s this area was filled in and this extra loop was put in to allow a smoother radius of travel. Today, the lines are no longer in use.
