These look like a water outfall or conduit which has fallen into disuse and become disarranged, as a tiny stream makes its way out from underneath them towards Carr Beck. Some time after submitting this photo I found a postcard which depicts this jumble of stones from a distance and captions it "Wishing Well, Greengates Woods".
