The toll bridge opened in 1870 being designed by E. W. Hughes. http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-458930-wilford-bridge-toll-house- It ceased to be used for collecting tolls in 1974. The main part of the bridge was rebuilt to carry pedestrians and cyclists only in 1980 but has recently been rebuilt again to carry the new tram line to Clifton.
