Waddon Ponds, off camera to the left, are one of the headwaters of the River Wandle. In the 18th/19th century the Wandle was perhaps the most industrially-exploited river in the country: its rapid drop to the Thames made it possible to construct mills very close together along much of its length. Waddon Ponds, I suspect, began as a millpond for a mill located just beyond the road signs.
