Romford station opened on 20th June 1839 as the eastern terminus of the Eastern Counties Railway from Mile End. Both these termini were temporary with the line extending east to Brentwood and west to Bishopsgate (Low Level) in 1840. The Romford to Upminster Line was constructed in 1893 as a branch of the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway and this opened on 7th June 1893 at a second station in Romford. The two stations were combined in 1934. This view shows on the right a train on the half hourly shuttle about to set off For Upminster via Emerson Park Halt. On the left a train bound for Shenfield has just set off.
