Brockholes Floating Visitor Village

Brockholes' floating Visitor Village has won multiple awards and is the first of its kind in the UK. Traditional buildings need huge amounts of concrete and steel to make a firm ‘raft’ foundation on which to build but 4000 tonnes-pontoon on which the Visitor Village sits is made of reinforced concrete with polystyrene inside and is actually floating in the lake. As Brockholes is on a flood plain, this design deals with potential flooding in an innovative way The “village” houses shops, an exhibition area, an activity room for schools and community groups, a restaurant and a conference centre.
