Bench mark on 50 Rugby Road

This is an old 1GL-style bolt combined with a large cut mark, but not found on any OS map prior to 1973. Perhaps forgotten by the previous map makers and/or perhaps a replacement for the original Dunchurch to Rugby 1GL mark no.5, which was established in this vicinity in 1848 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 400.6320 feet [122.1126 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Birmingham to London (Branch Line from Dunchurch to Rugby) levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 5. Bolt in corner of stable at West end of the Cock Robin Inn ; 2.55 ft. above surface" (p232). The present house might have been attached to stables at the rear. The height given by OS today matches that on the 1848 Public Abstract (allowing for the difference in datums) so this could be the original benchmark.
