Ex-LMS Royal Scot 46115 Scots Guardsman sets off for Carlisle, after taking over from a diesel. The west coast main line platforms at Carnforth were closed and cut back in about 1970 (prior to electrification), as shown in the photo. This allows fast trains to pass through safely and without hindrance. This means that passengers to or from the north have to travel south to Lancaster and return.
