Between the nearest and middle windows on the first floor is a panel which says, "In this house George MacDonald was born 10th Decr 1824", though his baptism record does not state this specifically; "10 December 1824 Mr George Macdonald Manufacturer in Huntly had a son by his wife Helen McCay baptized and named George. Witnesses Charles and James Macdonald". 'Manufacturer' at that period usually implied a weaver, or an employer of weavers. George MacDonald was the author of numerous books including 'The Princess and the Goblin', 'The Princess and Curdie' and 'At the Back of the North Wind', all popular children's books. He also wrote adult fiction, poetray and theological works. See http://georgemacdonald.info/ for full details. I had some difficulty finding the house although I had a book handy with a photograph of it, but I completely failed to recognise it because the ground floor has been hacked about out of all recognition to create the shop front for the dental practice, and the upper floors to add dormers and so on.
