The plaque in the foreground records the opening of the station by His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester on October 30th 1992. The plaque in the background gives a potted history of the Llynvi Valley Railway which opened as a broad gauge railway in August 1861, partly following the route of the horse-drawn Duffryn Llynvi & Porthcawl Railway. The railway greatly accelerated the industrial development and economic growth of the townships of the Llynfi Valley. The chief engineer was Isambard Kingdom Brunel. After his death in 1859, the work was completed by Robert Pearson Brereton. The resident engineer was Captain McNair. The plaque was presented by ICE Cymru Wales and the Llynfi Valley Historical Society in 2011 to mark the 150th anniversary. The present-day spelling Llynfi is used for the area. The 19th century partly Anglicised spelling Llynvi is used for the railway.
