The Cheadle Railway ran from the main line at Cresswell to Cheadle and was completed in 1892. It was always more important as a goods line, for carrying coal from the Cheadle coal field, than for carrying passengers. The remains of Tean station, formerly Totmonslow station, are visible under the road bridge in the background. The last passenger train was in 1963, quarry traffic ceased in 1978 and the line closed entirely in 1986.
