The inner part of the London Road became a place for more refined residents to occupy from 1814 onwards. Claremont House is a fine example of a three storey town villa of 1820; the iron balcony is a prominent feature of this Grade II listed structure, albeit at the rear of the premises. The building is now an assessment centre for those with housing problems.
