Hartside Cottages and the immediate moorland are located on the south side of the A686 as it climbs from Alston for Hartside Pass. Cross Fell lies on the horizon the tone of its snow cover almost merging with that of the cloud. The darker band in the middle distance is at the vicinity of Greencastle.
