This remnant of wall is all that remains on the surface of Kirkby Castle - hardly comparable with those at neighbouring Pickering and Helmsley, but at least there's no admission charge to see this. This was one of two 'castles' in Kirkbymoorside [even less remaining of the other one], although strictly speaking this was more of a hunting lodge, similar to John of Gaunt's Castle in SE2154. It belonged to the Neville family and was used mainly in the 15th and 16th centuries, with a hunting park to the north. Note Low Park and High Park farms nearby.
