St Stephen’s Church at Carlby has a tower with a tall spire that is 700 years old and situated in a quiet corner of the village that gives it an air of secluded calm. Most of the building dates from the 13th century with the upper portion being 15th century work while the church contains what is thought to be a Saxon coffin lid. The interior is spacious with some remains of 17th century woodwork and fragments of a mediaeval Doom painting above the chancel arch.
