The bracken at the foot of these pine trees indicates soil acidity due to the presence of residual clay-with-flints, which capped most of the chalk downs hereabouts since the Ice Ages, but has steadily eroded away. http://www.bgs.ac.uk/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?pub=CWF
