Every August the promenade is closed to traffic for an evening and thousands of cyclists of all ages take to the street and ride all or some of the seven or so miles from Cleveleys to Squires Gate at speeds of their own choosing. It is great fun, if slightly hazardous and is a far better way of seeing the illuminations than sitting in a queue of barely moving traffic.
