Not immediately apparent as it is high up on the gable of this building, but lodged in the gable masonry below the two-light window is a cannonball, a probable relic of the English Civil War. It was just one of hundreds fired into the Melcombe Parliamentarian garrison in the town during the Battle of Weymouth in February 1645. Image This building forms part of an early C17 development in Maiden Street and St Edmund Street that included the Ship and the Duke of Cornwall public houses. Their C17 facades are relatively scarce in the town, and are Grade II listed .
