Charles Waterton [a pioneering conservationist] planted holly on his estate to provide 'an impenetrable retreat where the buntings, blackbirds and linnets take their natural repose'. His Walton Hall estate is the first recorded nature reserve in the world. The footpath alongside is part of Wakefield Council's Waterton Trail.
