Folkestone, Kent, The Leas, The Step-Short Centenary Memorial Arch. The Memorial Arch commemorates the Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and was dedicated on August 4th, 2014. 12 plaques commemorate the men and women passing through Folkestone during the first World War. This plaque reads: "IN UNDYING MEMORY OF THE Many million officers and other ranks, both men and women forming THE NAVAL, MILITARY, AIR AND RED CROSS SERVICES OF THE KING'S IMPERIAL AND COLONIAL FORCES who crossed the seas in 1914 - 1919 to defend THE FREEDOM OF THE WORLD (Dedication taken from the Harbour Canteen books)"
