Folkestone, Kent, The Leas, The Step-Short Centenary Memorial Arch. The Memorial Arch commemorates the Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and was dedicated on August 4th, 2014. 12 plaques commemorate the men and women passing through Folkestone during the first World War. This plaque reads: "Over 50,000 Canadian troops arrived and soon became part of Folkestone life. A strong bond is formed and in 1917 local children assemble at Shorncliffe Military Cemetery to place flowers on the graves of Canadian soldiers buried there. This unique ceremony still takes place each year on Canada Day."
