Hot white road paint is dispensed into a jug from the lorry in the background. The paint is decanted into the marking implement, a metal box with a slot in the base from which the paint is released as a band on the road surface. The paint cools and sets quickly which may explain why only small quantities are used at a time. Doubtless a different system is used on main roads and motorways. Photographed with consent.
