Commissioned for the Mond Building (see Image) by the Russian scientist Peter Kapitza as a compliment to Ernest Rutherford, director of the Cavendish Laboratory. Gill carved his own monogram inside the crocodile’s mouth. “Crocodile” was Kapitza’s nickname for Rutherford; there are various explanations for this on the Web, none especially convincing.
