The almshouses on West Street were endowed by the entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir James Bradford and were built in 1907 to provide accommodation for the poor. The almshouses are now used to accommodate senior citizens from the local area and are administered by the James Bradford Helpston Trust, a registered charity. Sir James - who was born in Helpston in 1841 - made his fortune in the railway industry and served as chairman of the Wainfleet, Firsby and Skegness Railway. He died in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, on April 24th., 1930.
