Designed by Tom Price, the church is described in the Pevsner Architectural Guide "The buildings of Wales: Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion" as "an interesting design, let down by poor finish and detail". It opened for use on 16 August 1970, but closed in 2008 due to problems with the roof. There have been plans to rebuild it to allow the catholic community in Aberystwyth to regain a permanent home following the closure of St Winefride's Church in Queen's Road (see Image) but this has met much opposition, due to the poor location of the Penparcau site due to its distance from the main town.
