The railway connection from Downpatrick to Killough and on to Ardglass was completed in the 1890s by the Downpatrick, Killough and Ardglass Railway Company. Before its closure in 1950 it had passed to the ownership first of the Belfast and County Down Railway and then of Great Northern Railways (Ireland)- GNR(I).
