This line was kept open in preference to the Paddy, the main line from Carlisle along the Solway Coast. Now that Stranraer is no longer a ferry port the future of this railway is somewhat in question. A consequence of the closure of Stranraer in favour of Cairnryan is that it is now a little more awkward getting a bike to/from Ireland, with regards to costs. (I prefer to use Troon).
