North Dorset Police cover a huge 235 square mile area and work hard to effectively engage with the public and work with partner agencies to resolve local policing priorities. The team is divided amongst the main towns and also covers the large surrounding rural areas. They support each other as well as working with our response teams and volunteers from the Special Constabulary and wider community in the guise of CCTV volunteers, Community Speed-watch, home watch and farm watch initiatives.

The Gillingham and Shaftesbury Neighbourhood Policing Teams are led by an Inspector, supported by one Sergeant. The Gillingham and Shaftesbury teams also focus on the Rural areas around both Towns. The officers  will often work with each other and come together in problem solving or addressing specific local priorities, or to police the many events held in the area. Each town therefore has a regular Police presence, although the main response policing hub is based in Blandford and officers from the Blandford hub will patrol, attend incidents and investigate crimes in the North Dorset area as demand levels require.

Each town is slightly different in demography, the Northern most town Gillingham, has a population of approx. 12,000 – it has a mainline railway station and other strong transport links with easy access to the A303 (primary road route East and West). Similar to nearby Shaftesbury, Gillingham borders other Counties this means the teams often work and share information with our neighbouring forces.  The Town will see a significant housing development and associated population expansion in 2021.

Shaftesbury has a population of approx. 8000 and has already seen recent housing expansion with more planned/in progress. The common theme running through both team’s ethos is to provide a visible presence in those towns, to carry out community engagements as much as possible and provide a reassuring presence for the many local events happening throughout the year.

North Dorset has one of the lowest crime levels in the county, and is a lovely place to live, hence the continued expansion of the towns. Our intention is to keep you safe as well as support those affected by crime with a particular focus on the vulnerable in our communities.

Your Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) would like to hear from you, about any issues you may like to discuss, find out more about your NPT’s by using the links below. Contact us, so that together with our partner agencies we can make North Dorset a safer place to live.

Priorities

1 Oct 2023Tackling Drug Dealing in the community     We will proactively target organised drug supply by developing and acting on community intelligence.
Our enforcement will be focused on the incidents that impact the most vulnerable.
We will carry out regular safe and well checks on vulnerable members of the community, in conjunction with partner agencies and our colleagues in other Police teams. As part of this we will signpost vulnerable victims to our partner agencies and services that can offer help, support and advice. We have identified addresses within both Gillingham and Shaftesbury and are currently working with housing, and Dorset council to address these concerns, whilst safeguarding the vulnerable. When possible we will utilise the powers we have at our disposal including partial closures and Criminal Behaviour Orders.
1 Oct 2023Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB)     Our most recent NPT Priority Survey results continue to indicate that ASB is within the top three priority for the communities. We know that ASB adversely affects people who live within our communities. The team will work in collaboration with our partners to explore possible solutions, in tackling ASB within our communities.
With the help of our communities, we will identify vulnerable people who may be susceptible to becoming a victim of ASB and this will help to us to inform, reassure and signpost them for the appropriate support. We will also target ASB hot spots and offenders, utilising ASB legislation and tools at our disposal. We are aware of vehicle related ASB Gillingham, near to Barnaby Mead. Whilst we have already completed joint operations with our Roads Policing department, resulting in a number of tickets being issued, we will continue to monitor during our patrols. We have seen some Drug related ASB, as detailed in our Tacking Drugs priority. We will continue to patrol and address the issues affecting our communities.
1 Oct 2023Tackling Acquisitive Crime and Burglaries.     Our current Burglary figures are low, however it remains a top three answer on our NPT Priority Surveys. Therefore we will continue to tackle acquisitive crime and identify any crime series that may arise in the coming weeks, as we enter into the Autumn and Winter months.
To help reduce the perception of crime within this field, we will ensure we communicate effective crime prevention advice and also highlight police enforcement through the use of Social Media, as well as working with local drug and alcohol teams to try and divert and prevent persons from turning to crime. We will also hold regular engagement opportunities where our communities can attend and learn more about burglary crime prevention.
