Gain is the birthplace of the engineer John Waddell of Inch (1828-1888), whose company, John Waddell and Sons, was one of the contractors who built the Forth Bridge. He was also the builder of the Mersey Railway Tunnel, Putney Bridge in London, and several railways, and was involved in developing a plan for a Channel tunnel, though this was eventually dropped.
