A blue plaque on the wall of 5 Cwmdonkin Drive on the right marks the birthplace (on October 27th 1914) of Welsh poet and writer Dylan Thomas. Known for his hard-drinking, heavy smoking, unhealthy lifestyle in later life, less well known is that Dylan Thomas was a talented athlete in his youth. At the age of 14 he was the winner of the Swansea Mile during Swansea Grammar School's annual sports day in 1928. It may be that walking and running up the steep hills hereabouts, such as Cwmdonkin Drive, helped develop his leg muscles.
