The small inset of a Talbot hunting dog features in the architecture of New Street. The important local Horner family use it on their crest and coat of arms, and hence the nearby inn also bears the name of the animal. Mells New Street is, despite its name, an early example of planned expansion of a village. In about 1470 the Abbot of Glastonbury, John Selwood, set out plans for a set of new streets to be laid out in a cross - close to St Andrews church. However, the plans were not completed and only New Street bears witness.
