Colemankember Jewellery and The Swan, 27 & 28 Market Place, Wantage, Oxon

These two buildings, on a short spur off the main part of the Market Place, may possibly have been one building in the past. They are both Grade II listed and both at one time had a front jetty (part of upstairs floor overhanging the street below). Number 27, on the left, is now occupied by a firm of jewellers who as well as selling selected branded jewellery, also make their own. The building is very old. It was originally a 15th century hall house. A floor was inserted in the 17th century, with many alterations & additions over the years. Originally it was jettied and timber-framed. The current mock timber-framing is probably from around 1900. Number 28, on the right, is occupied by the Swan. The name is above the main ground floor window and there is higher up a bracket, from which would have hung a pictorial sign. It is a popular local pub and well known for live music. Originally timber-framed, it is clad in 18th century Flemish bond colourwashed brick; the roof structure is thought to be 17th century. There are many later alterations to the building. Image
