Christ Church was built in 1851 to the designs of Sir George Gilbert Scott and embellished in Midlands Decorated style. It replaced an older and by then inadequate Holy Rood church; local landowner Ambrose Goddard donated this piece of hillside land to meet the needs of a growing Swindon population. The hostel on the right of shot was founded by a Mr Anderson for the poor in 1877.
