The large concrete sphere which appears to form a focal point for the riverside seating area is one of a number which make up the artwork "Spheres" by Richard Cole. The spheres are located here and at two other locations nearby on the riverside (one location is here: Image). They were originally created for the Gateshead Garden Festival in 1990.
