One of the city's star buildings, designed by Lockwood & Mawson, who had, almost inevitably, won the architectural competition amid controversy. Built 1864-67. The style is Venetian Gothic (Image]), although to me the tower at least wouldn't look out of place in parts of northern Europe. Grade I listed. Nowadays it houses a shopping centre.
