Nos.44 to 96 Steynburg Street. They are some of the 77 houses built in 1902-03 by the Council in New Bridge Road, Rustenburg Street and Steynburg Street to replace unhealthy dwellings cleared to create Alfred Gelder Street. They are the earliest surviving houses built by the Council. The city used South Africa as a source for a whole series of street names following a period of intense patriotism (later known as jingoism) during the Boer War, 1899-1902.
