The tower in the middle distance was built as a look-out tower and shelter for people guarding newly buried corpses against grave robbers. Prior to the Anatomy Act of 1832 there was a serious shortage of bodies for use in anatomy schools and the shortfall was made good by the theft of corpses from their graves.
