When the youth of Hawick ventured upon English soldiers near the town. The locals routed the invaders and confiscated their banner. That incident has become the centrepiece of the town's annual common riding festivities. The now monument at the south end of the High Street is the latest monument to the greatest moment in Hawick's history.
