Borders Railway under construction

This trackbed was part of the so-called "Waverley" line from Edinburgh to Carlisle built in 1849. The line was closed in 1969 but now, under the Borders Railway project, is due to be reopened from Edinburgh as far as Tweedbank about 1 km to the east of this spot. Construction started in early 2012 and the line is scheduled to be opened for traffic in summer, 2015. A tarmac path followed the trackbed which carried both the Southern Uplands Way and National Cycle Network route 1. The Southern Uplands Way has been diverted over Galafoot Bridge and along the river bank; it is not clear what alternative provision has been made for cyclists on the National Cycle Route.
