Sunderton Pool was created around 1766 as one of two lakes in the landscaped gardens of Image, in this case by damming a small watercourse that already ran through the park. The other lake, Sundorne Pool, was drained sometime after the estate broke up in the early 20th century, and had gone entirely by the mid 1990s. In 2012, remedial work had to be undertaken to the dam & spillway at the southern end of Sunderton Pool, in order to reduce the likelihood of it breaking, and as a result, the level of the weir was lowered, reducing the level of the pool accordingly. What we see now is literally therefore a shallow representation of the original lake.
