Westward Ho! was named after the 1855 novel by Charles Kingsley which was set in Bideford. Entrepreneurs saw this as the ideal name for their new seaside resort, which must be unique as a place name incorporating an exclamation mark. It has a spectacular setting but like all such towns can seem a drab place on a wet day.
